Clarens is in the Eastern Free State in the Maluti mountains. It is known for its spectacular sandstone mountains and wonderful climate, it is one of the most picturesque spots in South Africa.
Clarens is part of the scenic Highlands Route and is surrounded by mountains. Activities range from: trout fishing, horse riding, abseiling, hiking, fly fishing, fossil hunting, white water rafting and golf. In the village, there is mini golf, abseiling, bungee trampolining and a climbing wall.
Clarens is an artists' haven with many well-known artists either living in or frequenting the village, with many art galleries scattered around the village square and the town. Be sure to wander around the village square taking in the gorgeous shops with locally produced items, coffee shops, restaurants and home decor shops.
Annual Beer Festival in February/March, Double 99 Cycle Challenge in April, Clarens Art Festival in May. Amohela MTB Challenge in May and Titanic Trail Run weekend in September. Be sure to catch the Carols in the Garden in December.
The Golden Gate Highlands National Park with its sandstone formations and cliffs is only 17 km from Clarens.
